Undertone is a styling term for the warmer, cooler, or more neutral direction that appears most harmonious when colors are compared near the face. It is not the same as ethnicity, skin depth, or the amount of pink or yellow visible in one photograph.

Warm palettes often connect with golden, peach, yellow-green, and earthy colors. Cool palettes often connect with blue-red, blue-green, cool pink, and blue-gray. Neutral undertones can wear colors from both directions but usually still favor a particular balance.
